Operation Valkyrie was an emergency continuity of government operations plan developed for the Territorial Reserve Army of Germany (Wehrmacht Heer) to execute and implement should, for whatever reason, there come to be a general breakdown in civil order of the nation; caused by the failure of the nominal civilian (Nazi) led government, to maintain control of civil affairs. The plan was approved by German leader Adolf Hitler, who intended it to be used in the event that physical disruption caused by the Allied bombing of German cities resulted in a breakdown in domestic law and order; or a rising by the millions of forced laborers from occupied countries working in German factories.

German Army (Wehrmacht Heer) officers General Friedrich Olbricht and Major General Henning von Tresckow modified the plan with the intention of using it to take control of German cities, disarm the SS, and arrest the Nazi leadership once Hitler had been assassinated in the July 20 Plot. Hitler’s death (as opposed to his arrest) was required to free German soldiers from their oath of loyalty to him (Reichswehreid). After lengthy preparation, the plot was carried out in 1944, but failed.

Operation Bagration was the codename for the Soviet 1944 Belorussian Strategic Offensive Operation during WW2, which cleared German forces from the Belorussian SSR and Eastern Poland. Compared to other battles, this was by far the greatest Soviet victory in numerical terms. The Red Army inflicted nearly four times as many losses on the Germans as they ustained, and liberated a vast amount of Soviet territory (whose population had suffered greatly under the German occupation). The advancing Soviets found cities destroyed, villages depopulated, and much of the population killed, or deported by the occupiers.

The Soviet armies directly involved in Operation Bagration were the 1st Baltic Front, 1st, 2nd and 3rd Belorussian Fronts, 1st Ukrainian Front.

The German army lost about a quarter of its Eastern Front manpower, including many experienced troops, NCOs and other officers, which at this stage of the war the Wehrmacht could not replace. The offensive cut off Army Group North and Army Group North Ukraine from each other. This forced both Army Groups to withdraw from Soviet territory much more quickly when faced with the following Soviet offensives in their sectors.

The Lower Dnieper Offensive was one of the largest WW2 operations, involving almost 4,000,000 troops on both sides and stretching on a 1400 kms long front.

It was another defeat for the Wehrmacht that required it to restabilize the front further West. The Red Army, which Hitler hoped to contain at the Dnieper, forced the Wehrmacht’s defenses. Kiev was recaptured and German troops lacked forces to annihilate Soviet troops on Lower Dnieper bridgeheads.

One of the costliest operations of the war, the casualties are estimated at being from 1,700,000 to 2,700,000 on both sides. The operation consisted of several smaller operational phases: Melitopol Offensive, Zaporozhye Offensive, Pyatikhatki Offensive, Znamenka Offensive and Dnepropetrovsk Offensive. Additionally, the Battle of Dnieper demonstrated the strength of the Soviet partisan movement.

The Battle of Kursk refers to German and Soviet operations on the Eastern Front of World War II in the vicinity of the city of Kursk in July and August 1943. It remains both the largest series of armoured clashes, including the Battle of Prokhorovka, and the costliest single day of aerial warfare to date. It was the last strategic offensive the Germans were able to mount in the east. The resulting decisive Soviet victory gave the Red Army the strategic initiative for the rest of the war.
